Domain management

Domains are indispensable when using email products (SMTP domains) and Skype for Business products (SIP domains). Under the “Domain management” menu item, you can manage the domains that can be used for the public services of the Telekom Cloud Manager. The domain overview (list view) shows you which domains you have already set up in the Cloud Manager and the properties of each of those domains.

When you access Cloud Manager, you will get an already verified domain name of the form customerrootname.telekom-cloudcenter.de (customer root domain) by default. You can use this domain immediately to create users and use products (such as Microsoft Exchange or Skype for Business). Please note that you cannot delete your customer root domain, you can only change some of its properties.

You can see the current status of your domain in the “Status” column:

  • Third-party hosted: All domains created in Cloud Manager and managed by other providers (such as 1&1) are considered to be “third-party hosted”
  • Registered: All domains assigned (registered) via Cloud Manager are given the status “registered”
  • Assigned: Domains that have been assigned in Cloud Manager but have not yet been fully and successfully registered in the respective registry have the status “assigned”
  • Deletion in progress: Registered domains for which a cancellation order has been issued have the status “deletion in progress” until the cancellation order has been successfully processed

To see the detailed data of a domain, click on an entry in the overview list of your domains. This will then provide you with functions for editing the domain.

You can also use the following functions to manage your domains:

  • “Order domain” function for the registration of domains that are new and available for acquisition (transfer from another, external provider, such as 1&1)
  • “Create domain” function for creating new (externally hosted) domains
  • “Delete domain” function for deleting (externally hosted) domains
  • “Verify domain” to demonstrate that you are the owner or technical contact for the (externally hosted) domain
  • “Verify MX” function to activate the receipt of emails for your (externally hosted) domain
  • “Cancel domain” function to cancel a domain registered via Cloud Manager

Domain properties

A domain can be identified with the following properties.

  • “Microsoft Exchange” property: If a domain is identified as an “SMTP”Microsoft Exchang” domain, it has already been made “known” to the Exchange (email) system of Cloud Manager. Domains that are just verified (“Verified” property) can be used as so-called “send-only domains”. This means that emails can be sent from email addresses with this domain, but emails cannot be received by email addresses with this domain. To send and receive emails, mail addresses with domains that are both “verified” and “MX-record verified” must be used. You can use domain management to set the “Microsoft Exchange” property of a domain for yourself to determine whether and how you want to use the domain for the email traffic.
  • “SaaS domain” property: This property is set automatically when you register a new domain via Cloud Manager or transfer another provider’s domain to Cloud Manager.
  • “Verified” property: If this property is set, you have previously demonstrated that you are authorized to administrate the domain in question (hosted by an external provider). You can demonstrate this by setting certain DNS records (or having them set) in your service provider’s domain management and by starting the verification check in the domain management of the domain. Domains that you newly register via Cloud Manager or transfer to Cloud Manager from your previous service provider (domain transfer) are automatically marked as “verified”.
  • “MX-record verified” property: A domain is identified as “MX-record verified” if it has been configured for receiving mail. In order for email addresses with this domain to be able to receive emails, certain records (MX = mail-exchange records) have to be entered in the domain management (DNS management) of the domain provider (e.g., 1&1). These entries ensure that emails from the Internet find the correct path to the Cloud Manager’s Exchange email system. Domains that you newly register via Cloud Manager or transfer to Cloud Manager from your previous service provider (domain transfer) are automatically marked as “MX-record verified”.
  • “DNSSEC” property: A domain is identified as DNSSEC (secured) if the “DNSSEC” option has been activated and the domain subjected to DNSSEC securing during registration/transfer or subsequent editing of the domain.
